Types of Positions

NWSA has four types of positions:

  1. Individual Placements (IP)
  2. Field Team Members (FT)
  3. Leaders
  4. Professional Placement (P2)

Individual Placements

Looking for an opportunity to gain experience in an environmental field?

Individual Placements (IPs) usually serve a year with one of more than 50 schools, nonprofits, or local government agencies.

Project examples include teaching kids about recycling, conducting species surveys, coordinating environmentally focused volunteer programs, working with local agencies on water quality issues, increasing community involvement in service, leading service-learning activities, coordinating hands-on restoration projects, school and community-based environmental education, and enhancing public lands.

Whether working with a small start-up nonprofit or a larger, more established agency, IPs accomplish some great things while gaining professional skills and networking with the pros from throughout the environmental community.

Individual Placement positions start each fall.

Field Team Members

From the remote ridges in the Deschutes National Forests to the vibrant urban communities of the Portland metro area, each field team enjoys an adventure all of its own.

Team projects vary in length, location and focus depending on the needs of the community they serve. As a field team member you might find yourself camping along the Pacific Crest Trail as you repair a section destroyed by an avalanche. You may just as easily find yourself traveling by van out to the banks of the Clackamas River to work with local government agencies and The Nature Conservancy on a long-term knotweed removal project.

Project examples include restoring watersheds, teaching forest ecology, building trail, reducing forest fuels, leading crews of community volunteers and removing noxious weeds.

Full-year teams start in the winter, while six-month teams start up in the spring.

Leaders

Have some experience leading teams of your peers? Interested in further developing your leadership skills?

NWSA has two types of leader positions that might be right up your alley: Individual Placement & Field Team Leaders.

Leaders are chosen for the leadership skills that they bring to the program and for their potential to develop new skills in the following areas: coaching and mentoring, facilitation, event planning and community building. NWSA's leader positions vary widely and can include leading a team in backcountry projects, coordinating with multiple project partners on shorter-term projects, or providing on-going support to a larger group of members serving on a diverse set of projects within a larger geographic area.

Professional Placement — P2

P2 brings together professionals and organizations to meet the challenge of this region’s experience-specific environmental concerns. Administered by Lower Columbia Center, P2 has been designed to recruit highly qualified men and women to serve on compelling, environmentally focused projects.

P2 professionals (members) enrolled in this 11-month AmeriCorps program bring their education and expertise to the government or non profit organization’s project. In return P2 members gain experience and insight into the web of environmental organizations, institutions, and agencies as they network and collaborate on projects and explore training opportunities. Additionally members receive a monthly stipend, medical insurance, education award, childcare allowance, forbearance on student loans with accrued interest payment at successful completion and a training fund.

Aligning with the timing needs of the organization, enrollment into P2 is on an ongoing basis. New P2 positions are posted as they become available and advertised nationally. For more information or to be added to the P2 mailing list contact margi.guifoyle@esd112.org
