Each year, we strive to develop new ways to bring innovative programs and opportunities to the communities we serve.

PEEPs
An environmentally-focused summer camp that engages Portland area youth in one and two-week sessions that utilize service-learning opportunities to explore local issues such as hunger, nature awareness and environmentalism. Participants gain skills in leadership, civic engagement, and environmental consciousness. Join us for a fun summer of exploration and service.
EnviroMentors
A pilot program that will pair 25 middle school students with energetic and committed mentors who will provide opportunities for the youth learn about their community, themselves and the environment while also addressing locally relevant environmental needs. Through hands-on environmental service-learning, role modeling and relationship building, EnviroMentors will empower youth to recognize their own potential and abilities and remain motivated to stay in school.
Forest Explorers
A nature/science-based program that develops student’s sense of ownership of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest by increasing their knowledge of forest ecology, and by teaching them leadership and problem solving skills through hands-on learning activities. The program, which is provided free of charge, serves 75 students (4th - 8th grade) in five rural Skamania County schools and includes a one week after-school program at each school in the spring and the fall, and a two-week summer camp.
Summer Mountain Journey
An outdoor adventure-based program for high school students that explores the rugged wild lands surrounding Mt. Adams. The eight-day journey combines service-learning and leadership development opportunities with unforgettable adventure and life-long outdoor skills. Activities include backpacking, lake kayaking, caving, white water rafting and a service project. NWSA is also piloting a Summer River Journey for high school students that will include an eight-day odyssey down Oregon’s scenic John Day River.
