Updates on our 2009 Spring Program coming soon!

2008 Fall Program

Check out what we did in the fall of 2008!

 Fun at the Beach!

On September 20th PEEPs spent the day at the Oregon Coast!  We participated in SOLV's Annual Fall Beach Clean Up, where we picked up a lot of styrofoam and small pieces of plastic! We also went to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast where we learned about the dangers of plastics in the ocean, and what we can do to help solve the problem! Here, we also got to meet some Common Murres, a Spotted Owl, and a small Fawn that tried to eat our clothing for lunch! We had a great time at the Coast, and hope that you can join us next week!

Our Groundwater Adveture!

On October 4th, we headed out to the Columbia Slough Watershed Council at Whitaker Ponds. We discussed what groundwater is, how we depend on it, and how it becomes contaminated! We just missed the rain while working to remove a patch of Morning Glory on the property, and discussed how invasive species play an important role in our watershed health. In the afternoon we reviewed the components of groundwater while building our own sweet edible aquifers! As one of our campers mentioned, it was a "perfectly perfect day"! Consider registering for next Saturday, and join us for some fun!

Is Our Water Clean?

On October 18th, we learned about our watershed, and where our drinking water comes from. We discussed how fresh water pollution affects our local wildlife species, and ultimately, us! We worked with Oregon Trout and alongside a few David Douglas High School students to plant willow trees alongside the Salmon River, creating habitat for Salmon and other wildlife species!

Let’s give a Hoot, and stop pollute-in

On November 1st, our last fall service day, we discussed what we have learned about water pollution, and how we affect it. We partnered with the City of Portland and SOLV to find out what they are doing to combat and prevent water pollution from entering our streams and rivers. In the morning we worked on a small project in a SW Portland neighborhood to stabalize a riverbank. We spent the afternoon learning about Portland's rivers, and how they have changed.

Jr. Camp Counselor Program

Summer 2008

At PEEPs we understand that 14 and 15 year olds desperately want to find a job, but have a hard time getting the experience they need. By joining the PEEPs Jr. Camp Counselor program these students will gain responsibility and leadership skills that will prepare them for both high school and the work field.

During camp, Jr. Camp counselors will have set responsibilities, and will learn from our camp counselors what it is like to monitor and teach students in a large setting. These responsibilities include assisting camp staff in games and activities throughout the day, acting as co-pilots to our counselors while driving in PEEPs vehicles, as well as being part of a feedback loop to PEEPs staff members. While we request that Jr. Camp Counselors fulfill their daily responsibilities, we also want them to have fun and learn at camp. We will provide opportunities to learn new skills, but also allow them to still be a camper in our program.

We want students to grow as much as possible this summer, and we will request that they work hard. The first thing we ask from Jr. Camp Counselors is that they participate in an interview, and that they can explain why they are interested in being a part of this new program. Once Jr. Camp Counselors have completed their summer camp experience they will be equipped to take on leadership roles in high school, and they can write about PEEPs on their resume, better preparing them for the work field.

This program is a new addition to PEEPs summer camp, and therefore we are offering this program at a pilot price. Jr. Camp Counselor’s attend camp for $100 a week!

If you are interested in the PEEPs Jr. Camp Counselor program, please contact PEEPs staff directly to set up an interview.
